OPTION #3

British Museum!

Built in the 18th century and an intrinsically spectacular building in its own right, the British Museum houses one of the most precious collections in the world, showing the works of man from prehistoric times to the present day. Its permanent collection, numbering some eight million works, is among the largest and most comprehensive in existence and originates from all continents.  It was established in 1753, largely based on the collections of the physician and scientist Sir Hans Sloane, and first opened to the public in 1759.  Its expansion over the following two and a half centuries was mostly the result of an expanding British colonial footprint.  Indeed some relics are the object of controversy and of calls for restitution to their countries of origin. A lifetime could be spent exploring the museum but today we will touch on just a few of its treasures, including the Rosetta Stone which unlocked the secrets of Egyptian Hieroglyphics, the Elgin Marbles, a Roman mosaic pavement and the Lindow Man, the preserved body of an Iron Age man.
